HIGH SCHOOL TEACHING SERIES

February 21, 2012

We have started a 3 week teaching series with the somewhat intimidating title of “Curse God and Die”. I feel like this should be followed by a lightning bolt and thunder crash every time I say it! This title actually comes from the “advice” that Job’s wife gave him during his testing. This study will be a study of the Biblical book of Job and broken down to the following emphasis:

Week 1 – Don’t give up on God

Week 2 – Don’t give up on people

Week 3 – Don’t give up on yourself (in your faith journey)

Some questions to ask at home:

1) What did you learn from the story of Job week?

2) What one thing challenged or stuck out to you this week?

3) Are there any trials or tests you feel you are going through this week that we as a family can help you with?

New Flood series “WHY?”

January 19, 2012

We have started a new series in The Flood we are calling “WHY?”. This series will be looking at the “why questions” of the Christian faith like why we pray, why we read the Bible, why we choose purity and more. I am excited to see the impact this series has on our students as most of these questions have come from them!

Some questions to ask at home:

1) Which “why question” did you study this week?

2) What was the answer given?  How do you feel about this answer?

3) What was your favorite discussion from small group this week?

We will be starting our new Imagine series this next week in both Modified and The Flood!  I can’t wait to teach through this series on what our lives could look like if we could imagine them as being Christ-centered.

IMAGINE TEACHING SERIES

August 29, 2011

This fall both The Flood and Modified will be teaching through a series along with the entire church we are calling “Imagine”.   Each week the Middle School and High School groups will be studying the same Scripture and Biblical point that the church as a whole will be studying on Sunday morning, just altered to directly communicate with them in an appropriate way for your student in their unique place in life.  This series will take a look at what we can imagine our lives to be like if Christ was at the center.  We are going to imagine a Christ-centered life at school, within the family, among friends, in the area of money and contentment, and every aspect of a person’s life.

August 16, 2011

The Flood has started a new teaching series titled “The Narrow Path”.  We will be looking at Biblical characters who chose to take the narrow path, to do the right thing, to do the hard thing… even though doing the opposite would have been easier.

Questions to ask at home:

1) What Bible story was taught tonight?

2) What “narrow path” were you challenged to take?

3) What was your favorite part of this weeks Flood?

We are starting a new teaching series titled “Counterfeit”. This series will look at the things in life that we strive for to find our identity and happiness other than in Christ, and how ultimately, they leave us empty.

Some questions for home:

1) What type of counterfeit happiness did you study tonight?

2) Do you think this is an area you tend to find yourself finding your identity in?

3) What can you do this week to focus more on finding who you are in Christ?

We will be teaching through a series called Am I Happy? this month.  The goal of this series is to take a look at the things we strive for to make us happy, but really leave us feeling unfulfilled in light of the happiness that Scripture describes.  This series is based on the teaching of Sean McDowell.

Questions to ask at home:

1) What did the students interviewed in the video talk about this week?

2) What was your favorite question asked at small group?  Why?

Our high school students are currently going through a series we are calling “The Three Hardest Words”.  This series is based on the teaching of Leonard Sweet.  The idea is that the three hardest words in the human language to get right are “I”, and “love” and “you”.  Our goal is that our students will better understand these three words and what it means to live out love in this world.

Questions for follow-up at home:

1) What did you study tonight?

2) How were you able to go deeper in your small group?  Which small group question this week really challenged you or made you think?

3) Do you feel you are living the Biblical truths taught this week in your daily life?  How can I help you to better live them out?

For the next several weeks we will be taking a look at the spiritual disciplines of the Christian faith in a series we are calling, “Spiritual Habits”.   Our goal for this series is to examine the habits that we can implement into our lives that will help us more closely connect with and follow Christ with our lives.

Follow-up questions for parents to ask:

1) Which spiritual habit did you study tonight?

2) Is this a habit that you think could benefit your spiritual journey?

3) What steps are you willing to take to make this a regular habit that you practice in your life?

4) How can we as a family support you in this habit?

We are excited about our newest middle school teaching series.  Each week we are going to  look at ways we can keep our spiritual momentum far into the new year as we learn how to love God and love others more!

Questions to ask at home:

1) What are you doing to build momentum in the way you are loving God?

2) What are you doing to build momentum in the ways you are loving the people around you?

3) Who is someone you can invite to The Flood this week?
